Band on the Run
Je etude francais tres beaucoup ans mais je ne parle pas. I studied for more than 11 years. My college stressed reading and writing. We studied Sartre, Camus, Appolonaire, Beckett's Waiting for God. I loved the lit. My dream was to study at the Sorbonne but then I heard a Parisian accent is considered low class.
Can you recommend anything for true fluency besides an immersion course or lving in France (the best)? I fear my own insecurites made the matter worse. I always ran to the registrar to take French pass, fail so my life would not be ruined. I used to live in NY where there are numerous French support groups. Now I live in the suburbs.
I know people are speaking French in NY but I can only catch an occasional word. Creole comes much easier.
Thanks. sorry if off-topic.

Jesus' Physical Resurrection = Take the Ransom Back?
by InterestedOne inin my "study," we have encountered the matter of whether or not jesus' physical body rose from the dead.
i brought up a couple of scriptures that seem to indicate physical (john 2:18-22 and john 10:17,18).
the jw's i am "studying" with explained how, although those verses may appear to indicate physical, jesus couldn't have meant that because if he physically rose from the dead, he would have taken back the ransom.. now that i know the wt reasoning on this, can someone point me to another source, link, book, article, etc.

Ah, gnosticism has such allure today. People who never read the Bible rush to read newly discovered gnostic writings. Maybe it was mentioned and Ii forgot. Frankly, the part where not one of his followers recognized him post-Resurrection when first encountering him, spooked me a bit. The scene where he tells Magdalene not to embrace him is very spooky to me.
If Jesus is Christ, why can't he manifest in the same body. Jesus said God could pick up stones to replace the sons of Abraham. If he can transform stones, why not the Risen Christ. It is very strange since they teach bodily resurrection on earth. The speculation of what could happen is endless.
This is typical of Witness teaching. I knew about aluminum pans, not saying "God Bless," that Jesus did not die on a cross, a whole host of not central doctrine but the most important part, the nature of Christ, was never emphasized. They are so far from almost every Christian belief. Yet they are the actual Christians. I think not.

I thought about this more. Time based on the physical environment does exist, whatever arbitrary measuring system we assign. I thought of how our family dog knew time. My mom, her god, arrived home every afternoon at five. Rascal started her vigil at four by planting herself by the door and whimpering. 4:30- was time to progress to very loud crying and agitation which reached a peak at five. Plants know time, too. So creation is tied to planets and stars, etc.
I thought the Witness belief was that God was the creator and not subject to his creation. This discounts earlier JW views that he lived in outer space.
When I studied New Testament, we discussed Revelation. My heart was beating fast b/c the book terrorized me. The professor said that it was different genre than other NT writings. The Romans would kill you in many sundry and horrific ways if you openly denounced them. She went through most of the numerical references in Rev. Most were a code for current events surrounding the Emperor Domition's brutal persecution of the Christians. They would be recgonizable to any audience reading in that time period. Numerology was common.
JWs like to dabble in encyclopedias. They never grapple with the complexities of any subject. WTBTs does not read literature for education but only to proof and distort what they have already decided.
If I gave umbrage on a political post, I am sorry. When someone posts outrageous statements, it invites comments back. Sometimes people just get on a roar. If you post very slanted political commentary (which may be valid from your viewpoint. It is only someone's opinion, not a measurable fact), it is an open invitation for a response in kind. I will not be cowed by nastiness.

Were There Any JW Doctrines Or Beliefs That You Found Confusing?
by minimus inmost witnesses never could explain exactly who the "faithful slave" was (according to the society's explanation).
the resurection of the sodomites was another bewildering thing.
were they or weren't they going to be resurrected?

Lying for the Truth. Yes. Often commented on within my family.
My little sister was only two or three when we attended a large convention in Novia Scotia, such a beautiful province. A Behtelite was sitting next to us with his girlfriend. I was only about nine but I knew he was a bit too chummy with her for a Bethelite. Few Bethelites married then. L. brushed her chubby feet against the seat in front of her. The boredom. Toys can not be brought to distract. She was so cute and dressed in "little girl." The Bethelite took off his belt and handed it to my mom. We sat in horror. No words of rebuke or admonition. Straight to the belt and a savage beating. My mom, raised a JW, took the belt and barely touched my sister and gave it back.
This memory has stayed with me for decades. Are Bethelites allowed children now? I doubt it. This is not strict behavior; it is pathological behavior. Besides, children don't have the same brain capacities as an adult. It is sort of like taking your pet hamster to KH and expecting it to know every doctrine. Recent studies indicate that teenagers do, indeed, lack full brains which accounts for much of teenage behavior.

The Second Coming of Michael Jackson
by What-A-Coincidence inthe following has been confirmed by the witchtower bubble and trick society.... los angeles, ca, usa the numerous michael jackson sightings since his tragic death on june 25th gained credibility today when the jackson family finally revealed that the reason he has yet to be buried is that his corpse has been missing since three days after his death.. .
biblical scholars were astounded to discover that the previously reported "needle marks" on jackson's corpse were perfectly aligned with the wounds on the corpse of the previous incarnation of the messiah when the full autopsy report was revealed earlier this week.
even the scarring on jackson's scalp corresponds with the wounds left by the crown of thorns.. .

I was shocked to read this thread. The Trinity was rejected. I can understand that. I never heard that Jesus was not physically resurrection but it was a long while ago and I was young. There was some blending of what I picked up from civilization and the Witnesses. Kennedy was president when I was young so Catholic doctrine was discussed a lot.
Have the Witnesses always taught this? My father was a Behtelite. He would be shocked as would my mother.
They would still believe, probably, b/c they did not know what else to do. The strange part is that they were estranged from their Witness famiiies.

Sorry, I've been around the block at the most prestigious universities and my question was not stupid! There is malice on this board. First, who ever gave you authority to call me or my question stupid? I suggest the post that followed mine reveals the conclusion. I simply do not recognize your authority or understand the venom.
People post here about some notable things, such as boobs, favorite rock songs, favorite rock songs with the 80s with a female lead, the bra size of Russell's fifth mistress, etc. Give me a break.
I do recall not agreeing with some one-side political postings. It is my freedom.
Look in a mirror and mout the word "stupid."

NEWFLASH! Jesus is not the Son of God! When did this happen? It is the essence of Christianity. Now it is more like Scientology. Jesus always appealed to me. Was I so stupid that I believed He was God's son but not incarnate in the 1950s ,60s and early 70s. This is earth shaking news.
WOW! Does anyone know this outside of the Witnesses? It should put a very large damper on recruitment. What about Paul's letters and John 1.
I am confounded. All this time I assumed they were adoptionist. That Jesus was not God the father but so evolved that God made him his Son.
Why are they getting nuttier? Whose influence does this reflect?

One of my closest friends in high school who was medium black but with some Cherokee ancestry was beaten daily by a blue black school mate.
My Chinese friend is the darkest in her family. She shared with me that her mother used to call her names and beat her. This indicates some tendency outside of the North Atlantic slave trade to equate skin color this way.
Chris Rock has a great documentary called Black Hair on HBO now. It is still running. Many women on food stamps spend almost all their income on weaves. I recall the days of Angela Davis.
